New Canon EOS 40D:  Canon announcement of their new 40D digital camera.

The Canon 40D was announced by Canon on August 20, 2007. The 40D has started shipping as of August 30. A proven inside source says the Canon 40D will be like a 1D Mk III “lite”. Canon’s. The Official EOS 40D resource page is here. There you’ll find feature highlights, full specs, sample images and more.

The "significantly improved" 10.1-megapixel CMOS APS-C size image sensor, according to the company, utilizes larger microlenses over each pixel to reduce noise and expand sensitivity up to ISO 3200. It also offers 14-bit Analog-to-Digital (A/D) conversion process to recognize 16,384 colors per channel--four times the number of colors recognized by the EOS 30D SLR’s 12-bit conversion. The EOS 40D also incorporates the optional Highlight Tone Priority and High-ISO Noise Reduction functions first introduced earlier this year with the EOS-1D Mark III Professional Digital SLR.

Canon also announced new accessories for the EOS 40D SLR: the redesigned high-capacity Battery Grip BG-E2N facilitates high-volume shooting and easier vertical shooting and is compatible with up to two BP-511A battery packs or a set of six AA-size batteries--to double the number of shots that can be taken. The updated grip is also compatible with the EOS 20D and 30D models.

Two New Canon EOS Lenses (Available October 2007)

EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS

Canon also announced a new entry-level optically image-stabilized lens in response to consumer demand: the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS standard zoom lens delivers the same wide-angle to mid-range zoom flexibility of its non-IS predecessor, while adding true lens-shift image stabilization system for up to a full four stops of image-shake correction.

The higher performance provided by Canon’s lens shift IS system includes the ability to optimize the lens performance for specific shooting situations such as low-light, long-zoom or movement while shooting (or virtually any combination of the three). The image stabilization effect is available to photographers from within the viewfinder for more steady, more accurate framing and composition.

The optional EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS zoom lens is compatible with the EOS 40D SLR and any other EOS SLR that takes EF-S lenses including the EOS 30D, EOS 20D, EOS 20Da, EOS Digital Rebel XTi, EOS Digital Rebel XT and the original EOS Digital Rebel camera. The EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens is scheduled to be in stores in October for $200

The EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS is a lightweight general-purpose zoom lens that is ideal for handheld photography in a wide range of lighting conditions. Offering high optical quality, the lens has an 11 element, 9 group construction, including one aspherical element for crisp corner-to-corner detail. The lens maintains a closest focusing distance of just 25cm throughout the zoom range, giving photographs the flexibility to frame up close when needed.

EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS

Compact and lightweight, the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS offers the longest zoom range in the EF-S series to date. The 88-400mm equivalent focal length opens up new framing possibilities for owners of EF-S mount cameras shooting wildlife, sports and travel photography. Optical quality is assured through a UD element, which minimises chromatic aberrations that could otherwise cause reduced contrast and colour fringing.

Canon EOS 40D Press Release

Canon 430EX Speedlite:

This new flash unit is clearly aimed at buyers of the EOS 5D digital SLR which doesn't have a built-in flash unit. Compared to the 420EX which it replaces the 430EX has an increased guide number (range) and is approximately 40% faster at recycling. When attached to a camera with a smaller than full-frame sensor it detects this and adjusts its angle of coverage.

Portrait Photography:

One of our favorites for the Art of Portrait Photography is the Charis Website

World renowned portrait photographer, Phillip Stewart Charis, has been creating life size museum like portraits for over 50 years. Art historian Robert A. Sobieszek has compared his Renaissance like work to that of the Old Masters of the past using the medium of photography.

Monte Zucker Quote: "Joe Zeltsman was my biggest influence. I studied for ten years with him to learn the basics. With the information I learned from him I was able to then listen to others and weigh their techniques against my own. I could then determine when I should accept their ideas and integrate them into my own style"
